MOBO, Stellar and Dove award nominee, JayEss, makes a return to the UK Gospel scene and is better than ever. We caught up for a lil’ Q&A with the rapper to get the latest on his movements.

Can you explain your sound for us in 5 words?

Raw, exciting, provocative, turnt and Biblical.

One of our favourite JayEss tracks is “OK” featuring Utter Once, so, Jayess, is everything “OK” with you?

It’s always interesting to see what people’s favourite songs are of mine. All is well I’ve just released a new album called 7even. The feedback has been off the chain and we got allot of interesting visuals in store.

You’ve been quiet on the music front for a while, what have you been up to?

Well I took a step back from music after the release of Walking by Faith in 2012. I’d been doing music every year since 2000 and I needed to step away from it for a while because I stopped loving it. However I was still touring the states and staying active on social media.

You toured the states (big in the game)!? What were your highlights?

I love touring the USA they’re so welcoming over there, I’ve been touring every year since 2010.
Some of my highlights was performing on Bobby Jones Gospel, being nominated for a Dove Award and opening up for Fantasia. It’s been an amazing experience.

You’re engaged to a lovely looking American girl, does that mean we’re going to lose you to the States?

As I say to anyone who ask me this question “Yes I’m Finna Bounce” I’ll be moving States side not entirely sure when that would take place, but remember we are all virtually in the same place on social media.

Speaking of social media, you’re very vocal on yours about apologetics and socio-political issues, has that ever got you in trouble with your fans?

Yes it has got me in trouble. Some might call me extreme because I’m not liberal in my view, I actually believe the Bible is the Word of GOD and that in itself can cause people to feel uncomfortable because I’m not politically correct, I’m not even a politician so why should I be. But my Fans are my fans because they like hearing a rapper that can talk about various topics and be concise with the Gospel message.

You’ve been a part of the UK Gospel scene for years now. What positive changes have you seen, particularly now you’re back promoting a new album?

Positive changes? None really! The Gospel Scene is no longer a community like it used to be, everyone is doing their own thing.

Your new album is called “7even”. Interesting name, what’s the story behind it?

The number 7 is very significant to me, it represents the number of completion in the Bible. God Created the Earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th so 7 Marks the number of Completion. Fascinating thing is He also used 7 hebrew words in Genesis 1:1 to represent the 7 days of Creation; Bereshit bara Elohim et hashamayim ve’et ha’arets. Take your count. Also when I got saved it was based off a conversation with my friends in my sister’s front room, I gave my life to Christ that night and the conversation lasted 7 hours. Moving onto my album I feel it’s my complete project sonically and it happens to be my 7th project. So the title 7even was befitting for this project.

You’ve been nominated in the past for MOBO, Stellar and Dove Awards. Can this album be the won that wins you one of those?

I pray this album gets the recognition it deserves, who knows we’ve just got to wait and see.

You’ve got quite a few people featuring on the album including Lola Godheld, Utter Once, J Williams and more. Which was your favourite collab and why?

I’m actually fans of the artist I worked with on this album. All the collaborations fit perfectly for the sound I was aiming for. One of the biggest collaborations for me personally was with Evangel from Christcentric. He’s actually my favourite Christian rapper and he went in on the 7even Remix.

You’re performing at the upcoming Praise Party event in London. Why should people come out to see you?

If you’re a hip hop head then you know what’s up.

Do you think events like this are a good opportunity for evangelism or just for Christians to be entertained?

I think the Praise Party is an excellent outlet for both. Entertainment and spreading the good news.

Finally JayEss, what makes you a Juicy…a Juicy Gent even?

Gotta ask my Fiancée that! #Barz

The next Praise Party takes place on Friday 2nd September from 10pm – 3am.
