For the first time in MOBO’s 20 year history there will be a Pre-MOBO Awards Show at which this year’s Best R&B/Soul, Best Jazz and Best Gospel Awards will be presented.
Featuring a glittering list of celebrity performances from Courtney Pine, Mica Paris, Omar, Julia Biel, Faith Child, Annastasia Baker, Misha B, Dora Martins and hosted by American Gospel star Marvin Winans Jr, organisers have promised an ‘unforgettable’ red carpet gala in a new London music venue, Under the Bridge. The event takes place on the 27th October, with Friday 23rd October marking the final voting day for the 3 categories.
Now, just to make sure that you are not confused, this is not the main MOBO event which take place at Leed’s biggest concert venue – First Direct Arena on 4th November. The other 11 categories including Best African Act, Best Grime Act, Best International Album and Best Song will be presented during the main event as usual.
When we asked the organisers why they had divided the MOBO award show into 2 separate events, a spokesperson said:
“It’s an opportunity to really celebrate the vast talents in these three categories in a way that wouldn’t have been possible in a two-hour live awards show.”
Hmm…Some may argue that the removal of the 3 categories from the main award ceremony could represent a perceived devaluing of musical genres like Jazz, Soul and Gospel which arguable formed the bedrock of many of the modern styles we hear today. And it has been said that the Best Gospel category in particular often seems to be ‘glossed over’, almost as an afterthought. So perhaps a Pre-MOBO Award Show will really allow these categories to shine… I guess we will soon find out.
Don’t forget to get your votes in. Closing date is Friday 23rd October.
Over to you
