A few days ago R&B singer, Ciara, shared a sermon snippet captioned “#LevelUp. Don’t Settle.” warning against women walking in a “girlfriend” spirit. Thoroughly unimpressed, disgruntled singles didn’t hesitate to call out the celebrity on social media.
The video that got Ciara in trouble is a snippet taken from a John Gray sermon preached at the 2016 I Am Woman Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. In the video Pastor Gray addresses single women praying for a husband saying, “too many women want to be married but you’re walking in the spirit of ‘girlfriend’.”

Although we’re sure Ciara meant well, the internet army didn’t extend the same grace and immediately accused her of single-shaming.
“level up”? these types of messages are so toxic to women. your value does not depend on a man wanting you and marriage is not the be all and end all. ciara is basic af for spreading this https://t.co/EQqTBDAIwa

Ciara, honey, no. We rooted for you when you were going through your mess. I’m so disappointed that you would share something so silly. What pastor John Gray is saying here is intellectually lazy and a twisting of scripture. That’s not what Prov. 18:22 meant at all. https://t.co/IePlLJrVOL

Ciara’s playing a dangerous game. You should never, no matter how perfect your relationship/marriage appears to be, sit on a throne and tell people why they’re not romantically successful. You can be the queen of the ball today and have cake in your face tomorrow!

The post racked up 1000s of comments across social media prompting Ciara to respond with another post explaining her motive for sharing the video.

It wasn’t all bad though, many people soon came to Ciara’s defence with comments of support.
My new term/phrase is now going to be “Level Up” thanks C.

THE GAG IS..y'all supported Beyonce and her bitter lemonade ass album about forgiving her cheating hubby. Y'all support SZA being a side chick! Y'all are mad at Ciara though for telling y'all to #LevelUp and carry yourselves like a woman/wife! pic.twitter.com/RWLzF9bVX8

I know this may be a wild concept, but:
Carry yourself the way you want to be treated.
YOU tell people who you are and what your standard is. No one is gonna give you more than you’re worth, and only you determine your worth – by your actions and your values.#LevelUp
