BBC One – Songs of Praise’ search for amateur Gospel Choir of the Year 2015 has commenced with great gusto. The annual event always starts with a call out to Gospel Choirs across the length and breadth of the UK come forward and submit their entry.
Entering into the competition couldn’t be easier. The application form is really as simple as an application can get. You also have to accompany your application form with a CD recording of your team singing 2 songs. And before you start stressing about what songs your team could possibly do, there is already a list of 50 songs listed on the form for you to choose from. The list includes traditional gospel hymns such as: ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Blessed Assurance’ and ‘Old Rugged Cross’. If you want something a little more contemporary then you may want to go for Kirk Franklins – ‘Why We Sing’ or Mary Mary’s – Shackles’. They have even included well know worship songs like “Here I Am to Worship’ and ‘Shout to the Lord’.[accordion][acc title=”Full Song List”]• A Change Is Gonna Come • Abide With Me • Amazing Grace • Back In The Fold • Blessed Assurance • Count Your Blessings • Deep River • Down By The Riverside • Down To The River To Pray • Every Time I Feel The Spirit • Glory, Glory, Hallelujah • Go Down, Moses • Go Tell It On The Mountain • He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands • Here I Am To Worship • His Eye On The Sparrow • I Want Jesus To Walk With Me • I’ll Fly Away • Jesus Is The Answer • Jesus Loves Me • Joshua Fought The Battle Of Jericho • Kumbayah • Lean On Me • Love Lifted Me • Mary Don’t You Weep • Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen • Oh Happy Day • One Day • Peace In The Valley • Praise The Lord • Precious Lord, Take My Hand • Shackles (Praise You) • Shout To The Lord • Soon And Very Soon • Standing In The Need Of Prayer (It’s Me O Lord) • Steal Away • Swing Low, Sweet Chariot • The Old Rugged Cross • There Is A Green Hill Far Away • This Little Light Of Mine • Total Praise • Wade In The Water • We Shall Overcome • What A Friend We Have In Jesus • When The Saints Go Marching In • Why We Sing • Wings Of A Dove • You’ll Never Walk Alone • You’ve Got A Friend [/acc][acc title=””][/acc][/accordion]
You may be concerned that:
- Your team is not good enough
- Your team is not big enough
- You don’t have a full band to accompany your song submissions.
Well get this:
- The competition is particular designed for amateur choirs. They specifically do not want teams that have professional recordings to apply.
- With a maximum number of choir members of 40 and no minimum limit, you can be sure that your small team is free to apply.
- You are only allowed to have a keyboard accompaniment with your song submissions so there goes the ‘we need a full band’ excuse – out of the window!
Oh, and did I forget to mention that the closing date is: Friday 1st May 2015. More than enough to get yourself together.
So choir leader, worship team leader, church pastor and others, what’s stopping you from registering your team for BBC Gospel Choir of the Year 2015? And if you’re a member of a choir then give your leader a little nudge and tell them that you never know what could happen until you try.
